2008 Spring Challenge Ladder

The purpose of the challenge ladder is to provide an opportunity for players to meet and play different people in a competitive and fun atmosphere. As members of the ladder play each other, their relative positions on the ladder (the rungs) are adjusted to reflect the results of their matches, their opponent’s records, and how often they play. It is a great way to tune and develop your game.

Challenge ladder participation is open to everyone; Club members ($6 fee) and non-members ($10 fee). Trophies will be awarded to the top two players on the ladder.  Here is how it works.

Challenge Ladder Rules

1.  The number of participants will determine the number of ladder rungs; one player for each rung.  The initial ladder positions will be determined by drawing names from a hat.

2.  The first two weeks are designated “open challenge”.  You may challenge anyone above you on your ladder.  After the initial open challenge period, you may only challenge a player no more than three rungs above you on the ladder.

3.  If you win a challenge match, you take that player’s position and the loser moves down one rung, as do all others in between.  If you lose, your position is unchanged.

4.  A match is one game to 51 points. A player will be handicapped based upon their USATT rating and the USATT handicap chart.  Unrated players will be assigned a rating solely for the purposes of participating in this ladder.

5.  The service rotation shall be the same as in any regular match.  For example, if player A is handicapped 5 points, the match would start with the score of player A at 5 and player B at 0.  If player A serves first, he would serve one point and then player B serves twice, and so on.

6.  The challenger is responsible for contacting the challengee to arrange a mutually agreeable date and time for the match.  Matches will be played at Shorewood on Friday Club practice nights (non-members must pay standard playing fee) and challenge matches have priority for tables.  However, players may play their challenge match at any other location (UWM Rec Center, private home) that is agreed upon.

7.  The challengee must accept the challenge or forfeit the match.

8.  The challenger shall provide the ball(s) for the match.

9.  Within two days the winner must report the score; game count of the match.

10.  Participants in a challenge match may not be rematched for 14 days, or until each has played another challenge match, whichever occurs first.

11. When the challenge ladder ends, the final results will be determined by the following scoring system:  a.) the player will be assigned points based on their ladder position, i.e. if a 10 rung ladder, #1 position will get 10 points, #2 gets 9 points, and so forth on down; b.) plus 1 point for every match won; and c.) plus 1 point for every match played (no points for forfeited games).

12.  If players are tied based upon the point system described above, ties will be broken using the following criteria:  1st) total matches won  head to head; 2nd) the players’ total match winning percentage; and, 3rd) total number of matches played.

13.  Players joining the ladder after it starts will be placed on the bottom rung.

Each week the current ladder standings will be posted on the Club website. Match results and any problems should be reported to Linda Leaf (in person, telephone, e-mail).  Contact information for all participants can be found on the Ladder Standings page. The Club reserves the right to change ladder rules and procedures when appropriate.
